We understand how important oral care is for our children, and we monitor the ongoing development of your child’s mouth and jaw so that any issues can be detected and treated early.
Establishing good hygiene practises early can help ensure a lifetime of good oral health.
What age should a child first see a dentist?
An initial oral evaluation visit should occur soon after the eruption of the first baby tooth and no later than 12 months of age.
What should I expect at my child’s first visit?
In addition to inspecting your child’s mouth, our team will get to know your child, introducing themselves and the environment, striving to put your child at ease.
For children 2 and above we recommend an oral exam and fluoride application so we can prepare a treatment plan for your child’s dental needs. X-rays are taken when there is clinical justification to do so.
We are highly experienced in helping children overcome anxiety and recognise children are often afraid of anything new and strange. Parents are welcome in the treatment areas. We treat each child as an individual and acknowledge that some children better cope with their dental treatment with or without a parent present.
Visiting regularly helps your child establish a routine and a relationship with our practice.
Are there things I can do at home to help promote good oral health?
Regular teeth brushing is one of the most important things you can do for your child’s oral health.
When they are old enough to understand, show them how to brush their teeth on their own. Then follow with explaining how to use toothpaste correctly, highlighting the importance of spitting out the toothpaste after brushing and not rinsing. As your child grows and their manual dexterity develops, you can further their learning by introducing flossing as part of their daily oral care routine.
Encourage a low-sugar diet and educate them on the harmful effects of sugar on teeth.
Our goal is to maintain a lifetime of healthy smiles that begins with a child’s very first tooth. To book your child’s first dental appointment contact us on 01892 522 297 or book your appointment online today.
