A gingivectomy is a procedure to remove some of your gum tissue from around a tooth or teeth. It is performed to treat serious gum disease or to lengthen the height or width of teeth.
How does a dentist perform a gingivectomy?
We remove diseased tissue using a scalpel or laser. The remaining part of the gums are re-attached in and around the teeth.
The area is cleaned using saline and antibacterial solutions.
What happens after the procedure?
Once the procedure is complete, we place surgical dressing in and around the teeth and gums. The dressing remains in place for about a week.
Is there anything I can do to speed up the healing process?
The area should heal by itself in less than a month. You may be given an antibacterial mouthwash to use to help keep the infection from occurring.
During your routine dental check-ups, the dentist may want the hygienist to perform a preventative cleaning in and around the site.
