When you hear the words ‘dental surgery,’ you probably envision having your teeth looked at, the sound of a drill, braces and if you have undertaken them in more recent times, cosmetic procedures such as having dental implants or veneers fitted.

But were you aware that now you can also have facial aesthetics performed at the majority of dental surgeries, including ours?

At Woodbury Park Dental, our dentist in Tunbridge Wells is happy to offer this additional service, helping you to feel good about every aspect of your appearance, without the hassle of facelifts or other extreme procedures.

In this article, our dentist in Tunbridge Wells explores one of our most popular facial aesthetic treatments: dermal fillers. So read on to learn more!

What are dermal fillers?

The dermal fillers that our dentist in Tunbridge Wells uses are made from hyaluronic acid; this is a naturally occurring protein that plumps up the skin and reduces the appearance of wrinkles.

But as we age, the body produces less and less of it, leading to wrinkles becoming more common as we get older.

Injecting hyaluronic acid under the skin creates a temporary lift and smoothing effect, reducing the appearance of wrinkles for between 3-9 months.

What they can treat

Dermal fillers are very versatile and can be used to treat everything from crow’s feet to the appearance of worry lines on the forehead.

They can also be used to plump the lips, creating a natural pout and diminish the appearance of fine lines that can occur around the eyes, on the cheeks and around the mouth.

How they are applied

Dermal fillers are applied at our clinic via injection just under the skin near the area that is being treated.

The injections are not uncomfortable and can be completed in around 30 minutes, depending on how many are being administered.

Once they have been applied, you can expect the area to appear a bit swollen and red and some minor bruising is normal too.

Longevity

On average, dermal fillers will last for around 3-9 months.

But this depends heavily on where they are injected, how much is injected, your lifestyle choices and, of course, your age when they are injected.

For instance, if you are in your 40s when you have dermal fillers applied to the thin skin around your eyes, then it is unlikely that the results will last for as long as fillers injected into the forehead of someone in their 20s.

However, you can promote the longevity of your fillers avoiding alcohol to excess, smoking, tanning beds and sunbathing.

Things to avoid

Post-injection, you should avoid applying pressure to the site of the injection for at least 48 hours. That means no facial massages, no application of makeup and certainly no excessive rubbing as all of these can cause the fillers to move under the skin. If you experience discomfort, we advise placing an ice pack on the area.

Avoid using a tanning bed or sunbathing, as these can cause the body to become overheated, which can lead to the fillers migrating to other parts of the body.
