Here at Woodbury Park Dental, we offer a comprehensive range of preventive care and treatments to help protect the oral health of our patients. As the dentist in Tunbridge Wells, we genuinely care about the health and wellbeing of our patients. Therefore, we have created this guide to help people to look after themselves.

Get dental check-ups

Check-ups with the dentist in Tunbridge Wells are important for taking care of one’s oral and general health. Many people mistakenly think that they should only make an appointment if they are experiencing pain or an obvious issue with their teeth or gums. However, making appointments every 6 months or so means that these difficulties can often be stopped in their tracks before the patient even becomes aware of them.

The dentist in Tunbridge Wells can spot the earliest signs of a cavity or gum disease and minimise the need for treatment. This means that the patient saves time and money as well as minimising the risk that they must endure discomfort or invasive procedures.

Oral health is linked to general health, so keeping up with check-up appointments is a way to look after the whole body. People who have healthy teeth and gums are less likely to develop issues with the heart and lungs and conditions like dementia and arthritis.

GP check-ups

Maintaining good health should include getting check-ups at the GP surgery. These often do not require an appointment with the doctor. Instead, many surgeries offer the option to have basic checks completed by the practice nurse. They can take measurements of blood pressure and heart rate and identify the body mass index of the patient, an important indicator of health.

If these basic checks reveal that there is anything amiss, then the patient should then make an appointment with their GP to discuss how to proceed. They might seem unimportant, but high blood pressure for example often goes undetected and can be very dangerous due to raising the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

Get eyes tested

If a person does not wear glasses and is unaware of any issues with their vision, it can be tempting to believe that it is not necessary to visit an optician. However, the eyes can deteriorate gradually with age in a manner that the patient is not aware of. If they need glasses or contact lenses and do not get them, then the deterioration can increase and even accelerate.

In addition, the condition of a person’s eyes is an indicator of the health of the rest of their body. Illness and serious issues that they are not aware of can be detected by an eye test. The patient can then get the treatment they need in order to preserve their health.

An eye test can show the existence of many conditions. These include diabetes, multiple sclerosis, sickle cell anaemia, arthritis, heart disease, thyroid problems and much more. Therefore, it is important to book an eye test at least once every two years, even if there do not seem to be any issues.
