Believe it or not it’s now reported that 1 in every 4 orthodontic patients is an adult, and with the development of systems such as Invisalign in Tunbridge Wells and lingual braces it’s not hard to see why. Now more than ever orthodontics is accessible, aesthetically pleasing and adaptable to lifestyle and with all that in mind we at Woodbury Park Dental have put together a little guide on adult braces.

Why might you need braces?

Adults could decide to get braces for a number of reasons. The most common reason being

because they’ve had crooked or misaligned teeth from childhood and want to address this. This might be for aesthetic reasons, but could actually also relate to other things such as teeth grinding, digestion or even oral hygiene.

It could be because they have a smaller mouth. Smaller mouths can cause tooth crowding which causes overlapping and bite issues.

Types of braces for adults

Which brace is right for you will be a decision you will make in partnership with our dentist. Without seeing a patient and having a clear picture of their dental history and desired look it’s really tough to be able to pinpoint which brace would be best for you, but there’s no harm in taking a closer look at the options available.

Invisalign In Tunbridge Wells

Invisalign in Tunbridge Wells is the most commonly used brace in adults at our practice, its popularity has risen alongside the rise of social media with influencers flashing their Invisalign changed smiles. Removable aligners such as Invisalign are great for people with fast-paced lifestyles and working professionals. They are pretty much invisible to the naked eye and are at the very least far more subtle than traditional braces. They’re fully removable which makes them excellent for hygiene, eating and those really special occasions.

The complexity of the dental move desired will impact how long and how many sets of aligners a patient needs and as such the overall costs. If the patient is looking for a small change then Invisalign is known to deliver results in as little as six months.

Lingual braces

Lingual braces are growing in popularity with them being named the only truly invisible type of orthodontic system. These fixed wire braces are fitted on the inside of the patient’s teeth which means they aren’t at all visible. These are great for those wanting a fast and efficient brace that is also very subtle. The braces can make cleaning your teeth slightly more difficult and patients will need to pay careful attention to their oral hygiene and what they are eating.

Traditional wire braces

These days traditional wire braces come in natural colours so they are slightly more subtle than they were ten years ago. These braces come in at the most affordable price point and for that reason are great for anyone wanting to address their dental dramas as an adult. Like lingual braces patients do need to be hyper vigilant in the maintaining of their oral hygiene during the treatment period in order to avoid the development of gum disease or decay.
